Hindumbi Kouram Kakkada

For over five decades, Hindumbi Kaurom kakkada has been at the frontline of healthcare delivery in Lakshadweep – one of India’s most geographically isolated regions.

With 53 years of experience, she has rendered dedicated nursing assistance in more than 20,000 surgeries and emergency cases, often working with minimal infrastructure and limited medical resources. Her practice has included performing blood transfusions on ferry boats, assisting in high-risk caesarean sections under candlelight, and managing critically ill patients during long-distance sea and air transfers to tertiary centres.

Beyond clinical care, Hindumbi has been a driving force in transforming public health behaviour across Lakshadweep, where resistance to institutional healthcare was once widespread. Through sustained counselling, home visits, and community engagement, she helped increase acceptance of institutional deliveries, vaccinations, preventive healthcare programs, and played a key role in disease eradication campaigns for smallpox, tuberculosis, and leprosy.

During public health emergencies, her leadership has been critical. In the cholera outbreak in Amini Island, she organized treatment camps, led infection control initiatives, and conducted community awareness drives, playing a key role in containing the epidemic.

Her responsibilities have also included serving as a medical escort for critically ill patients, ensuring continuous monitoring and intervention during long and risky transfers across islands, often the difference between life and death.

In addition to patient care, she has mentored generations of healthcare workers, strengthened local capacity and built a culture of discipline, safety, and accountability within the healthcare system.
