Ronal Mario Canas Rojas

A clinician, educator, and digital pioneer, Ronald Mario Cañas Rojas has spent 16 years at the intersection of oncology nursing and health education, and in doing so, has redefined what a single nurse can achieve when conviction meets innovation.

As an oncology nurse specialist, Master’s graduate in Epidemiology, and university professor, Ronald has always operated across multiple channels simultaneously – clinical practice, academic teaching, and community education. But it was a gap he observed daily in the consultation room that would come to define his most significant contribution. Patients and families leaving oncology appointments carrying diagnoses they couldn’t process, overwhelmed by technical language, short on time, and with nowhere to turn. During the 2020 pandemic, that gap became a crisis, and Ronald responded by building Oncocuidado.

Oncocuidado is a free, non-commercial digital health education platform covering chemotherapy, symptom management, warning signs, palliative care, and therapeutic communication — all delivered in clear, humanised language that meets patients where they are. Ronald built it entirely alone, teaching himself audiovisual production, video editing, platform management, and digital analytics while continuing his full-time clinical responsibilities. There are no sponsors, no product promotions, no paid consultations. Its only currency, by design, is education.

The scale of what one nurse has built is striking. Across four platforms, Oncocuidado has accumulated over 9.1 million views, more than 289,000 hours of watched content on YouTube alone, 800 published educational videos, and a community of over 74,000 subscribers. These are not passive numbers. Patients and families report reduced anxiety, better understanding of their treatments, and earlier consultation for serious complications. Nursing students and professionals use the content as a recurring asynchronous learning resource, strengthening clinical reasoning and oncology competencies in ways that formal education alone cannot always reach.

What distinguishes Ronald is not just the scale of his impact but the integrity of the model. In an era where digital health content is increasingly commercialised, he has held a firm line building a platform that exists purely in service of patients, families, and the nursing profession. His vision is to take Oncocuidado global: expanding into English and other languages, improving accessibility through multilingual subtitling, and creating a replicable model of free, human-centred health education that transcends language, geography, and healthcare system.

Ronald Mario Cañas Rojas has shown that nursing leadership does not require a title, an institution, or a budget. It requires clarity of purpose, depth of knowledge, and the willingness to show up consistently, generously, and without condition, for the people who need you most.
